The name Marlegoo is derived from the names of stud principal, Cherie's parents. The prefix Marlegoo was originally developed for Mark & Tish's charolais stud and then later adopted for the families charbray stud, after Mark & Letitia's charolais were dispersed in 2003.
Founded on the basis of her parents charolais stud & red brahman bulls, Cherie had tinkered with F1 charbrays for a number of years as a youngster whilst her parents made a successful business of breeding Central Queensland toughened charolais, which they started breeding in 1990. Cherie finally got serious on her return to the family farm after university & travel, and her career brought her back to Biloela, as a local veterinarian in 2009.
The charolais stud had been dispersed by her parents, as they wound down a little from the intensity of running a stud, a hay business & contract earthmoving. However, a core of high quality charolais females & Cherie's charbrays had been retained as breeders alongside commercial trade cattle. Cherie used pink-nosed red brahman bulls, mostly via AI over these charolais females & so began the start of the F1 breeding herd & a journey to becoming certified charbray breeders. It has been a long road to build breeder numbers & convert to a completely stud operation. We have now reached this goal and our herd is now pure charbray, a breed that has proven time & again that it can sell anywhere and into any market.
Our first team of serious, registered charbray bulls were presented at the 2009 Charbray National Sale, in Gracemere, where we continue to sell quality seedstock every year. Located in the midst of the ticks, the fly, the heat & the cold, our charbrays have to stand the tests of the seasons. Flood & drought have featured heavily in recent years & the charbrays just continue to hold, perform & finish with ease, fitting all the markets available around us. During the height of the drought at the end of 2019 we made the call to finish our yearling steers on grain. Every single one graded EU, the vast majority hauling in the top money. All of them were under 18 months of age....that is the Marlegoo performance potential!
The stud was run jointly until earlier this year when Cherie took her share of the stud to "Koolibah" to continue breeding quality, easy doing and resilient Marlegoo Charbray bulls raised using regenerative, holistic farming methods with minimal chemical inputs. All bulls are maintained on pasture their entire life, even when being supplemented for sale, which in time I hope to be able to sell all bulls direct off pasture without the "necessity"of grain to be up to sale standards in a multi-vendor sale.
